The Dairy Farm

Hello children, my name is Farmer Douglas and I live on a dairy farm. I look after herds of dairy cows, and I milk them.

Dairy Cows

Milk and cream comes from Jersey cows and Holstein cows. Before my cows start to produce milk, they must have a calf first.

Healthy Feeding

I feed my cows silage, grass, cottonseed, soya, maize and lucerne to make sure that they produce top-quality milk that is full of goodness.

Milking Machine

My cows are milked twice a day, using a modern milking machine. Milking machines are much quicker and cleaner than milking cows by hand. When I have enough milk I send it to the dairy.

Milk Tanker Trucks

Big cold tanker trucks collect the milk and transport it to the dairy. These trucks are insulated to keep the milk cold.

The Dairy

When the milk arrives at the dairy, it is tested for freshness, antibiotics and germs called bacteria. It is also tested to check that no water was added and that there is enough butter fat. Butter fat gives milk its creamy taste.

Milk Silos

The milk is pumped from the tanker trucks and stored in very cold milk silos.

Processing the Milk

The milk is processed to make it safe to drink.

Pasteuriser

This big machine heats up the milk to kill all the bacteria.

Separator

This machine divides the cream and the milk to make delicious cream and fat-free milk for Mom.

Homogeniser

The milk is then pumped to this machine to mix the milk and butter fat evenly.

Bottling Machine

Before the milk is filled into bottles, it is re-tested in the laboratory. This makes sure that the milk is safe to go to the shops.

Trucks

The big dairy trucks take the milk to the shops for your mommy or daddy to buy.
